The Amazing TV Remotes

It really baffles me when I think of how many different TV remotes there are. How many have been discontinued and how many new ones are coming onto the market all the time. The difference in price is also astounding. The funniest thing is that all the amazing TV Remotes basically work the same way. Admittedly there are a few out there that are different but they won’t add up to many.

The heart of what makes the remote work is the LED light in the front of the remote which is an infrared technology. Just like any computer it works on a binary system. If you look at the front of the remote when you press a button on it you’ll see a red light blinking. It is sending a code. Three short blinks and one longer blink for instance. Your TV is receiving that information and will react to the signal. Different remotes however have different codes which their TV responds to. Think of it as a language. There are a few generic remotes out there which tend to work on a handful of different brands because they are all responding to the same language the remote is putting out. For example the volume up might be enabled because the remote sent out a signal of five dots and three dashes in sequence. The only issue is that a certain remote may operate most of the functions of a different TV but not all of the functions. In some cases the volume button may just turn the TV off for example. If you want to experiment don’t worry because it won’t harm your TV at all.

These remotes have been on the market for the last 25 years and even though there are thousands of different brands they all basically work the same way. Their range is about 30 feet and they will all need a pretty good line of site from the remote to the TV. If someone is standing in front of your when you try to change the channel your remote won’t get the signal through or around them. There are sometimes instances when sunlight or florescent light bulbs may interfere with your remote but most of them are tuned at a frequency that will avoid those problems.
