Cutting my Cable

Television, you’ve come a long way baby.

Currently it’s morphing, thanks to the internet it’s turning into one of the most important technological advancements ever. It is constantly developing into an extremely personal, custom and expansive on demand entertainment platform. The average cable subscriber has over 300 channels to choose from. The problem is that most of them charge a fortune to subscribe. They all seem to start you out with a package for around 50 bucks a month, then out of nowhere you end up paying $150 per month or more.

So I tried cutting my cable TV! Cold Turkey. No plan. That’s that! Screw them!

I already had a couple of forms of entertainment. We had Netlix and Hulu so I didn’t have to go without any entertainment at all. U tube is great for a few hours of free entertainment too. My first shock came though when I realized I had no news channels. Suppose the world was on the verge of ending and I had no way of knowing it? What then? What would I do. So I went online to find an alternative. I discovered an old technology that almost no one talks about any longer. A technology that used to come already built into a TV. I re-discovered the TV antenna. I found a great one online for 40 bucks and had it in two days. It took nothing to install and BAM I had a bunch of local TV stations including the local networks with the news. I was in business. Life without cable, not so bad after all.

If you want more content there are other inexpensive alternatives as well such as Hulu, Amazon Prime and more. In addition there is more and more content becoming available with devices such as apple TV and Roku, for very little money.

Now I have to admit that I also have a couple of 20 something sons that I rely on for most of my IT help. If you want one of those you would have had to start immediately and wait a few years or maybe just rent a neighbors kid. When they were born I didn’t know they would come with so many benefits. All of a sudden and I’m not going to name names here, we are hooked on to this website that has every current TV show there is. No commercials and absolutely free, you just type in what you want and boom it’s there. The reason I’m not mentioning any names is that the internet is still the wild wild west. I’m no lawyer so I can’t give legal advice and I’m not going to name any names. Pirate Bay was the first and they’ve been battling the government for a while now. Since it’s inception there are even more sites today. If you want it you can look them up online yourself and find one. Or just ask the 20 year old.

My last thought though is that if everyone just got their content free, eventually there won’t be any incentives to create new content. So I would exercise caution when you go on to these sites. To much of a good thing really isn’t good for everyone. The good news is that more and more less costly legal alternatives that are becoming available every day. So grab your remote, put your feet up and see what’s on tonight.
